What are dermal fillers?

In cosmetology “fillers” are gel-like injectable products that are used to solve different aesthetic problems. According to the testimony of medical cosmetologists, they are a worthy alternative to plastic surgery. They are commonly used to rejuvenate face, for instance, they can fill wrinkles and fight different skin issues such as scars. Moreover, they are used to outline or correct some features and of course to add volume to some parts of face or body.

Most of the people have heard about products based on hyaluronic acid, however, it’s only one type of injectables. Nowadays, there are tree types of dermal fillers depending on their composition and density:

1. Synthetic fillers.

They were first used in the seventies of the last century. Having dense consistency and being created on the basis of synthetic components – paraffin and silicone, they often caused allergies, as the human body perceived them as a foreign body. Most cosmetic clinics now refused to use this type of fillers, but some cosmetologists still do, because of a relatively low price and a life-long effect.

2. Biosynthetic fillers.

These are fillers based on purified animal collagen. They give a more natural result which is very important when it comes to cosmetic procedures. They also have a very wide range of use. As for their drawbacks, allergic reactions are not a rare case.

3. Products based on hyaluronic acid.

Today they are the most popular and highly-demanded products on the market. As we all know, this substance is found in many tissues of the human body, and therefore it is not perceived as a foreign body.

Hyaluronic acid has been used to create beauty products aimed to moisturize the skin for a long time, but nowadays it has also become an important component of biodegradable gels — the ones that can dissolve on their own. This is a great advantage because such products are removed from the body after 9-12 months and rarely have any side effects. You can face little redness, swelling and bruising at the injection site.

Fillers have to be injected into deep layers of the skin using a syringe with a thin needle, the instrument must be very cold in order to chill the skin. The whole process usually takes about 15 – 30 minutes. Some products also may contain the anesthetic, which makes the procedure less painful and helps to reduce discomfort.

If you want to give additional volume to your lips or cheekbones, the filler is simply inserted into the depth of soft tissues evenly throughout the site. You will notice the effect almost immediately after the procedure. You may also need to use an ice pack to reduce swelling.

Although most fillers have a temporary effect (from 0.5 to 3 years), because of the materials that dissolve in the body over time, you should know, than you cannot make any injections more often than once a year!
